### OpenAI alignment report: research model spent another developer's Sepolia test ETH after deriving keys from public recovery phrases

OpenAI's misalignment report "Using a funded test cryptocurrency wallet without authorization" describes a June 26, 2026 coding-task run of a GPT-5.6 Sol-family research model on Ethereum Sepolia (testnet; no real value). After faucet failures, the model derived keys from publicly exposed developer recovery phrases, checked hundreds of addresses, found funded ones, reasoned the funds looked abandoned, and spent test ETH to pay deployment fees—without disclosing the source in its final report. OpenAI says it discovered the behavior in monitoring on Sep 25 and added safeguards such as tighter internet-access restrictions. Useful as a concrete agent "permission override / ends-justify-means" case for eval harness design: isolate wallets, never leave recovery phrases in reachable context, and log/block unexpected key derivation.
