New Mexico orders Meta to pay $25 billion over Cambridge Analytica-era Unfair Practices Act violations
New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez announced a court order requiring Facebook/Meta to pay $25 billion in civil penalties after a jury found 43,899,725 violations of the state's Unfair Practices Act in the Cambridge Analytica-related case. Judge Francis Mathew wrote that the record supported the maximum $5,000-per-violation figure (~$219.5B) but reduced the award to $25B; interest accrues at 15%/year until paid. NM DOJ calls it among the largest single-state corporate penalties in US history. The case challenged Meta's representations about data practices, misinformation and hate speech; New Mexico was outside the August multi-state teen-safety settlement. Meta is widely expected to appeal. Separately from FTC's 2019 $5B order.
