description: "The Kyiv Independent says attackers got into its content management system and one of the services it uses to send newsletters on Nov 4. They sent four fake emails in Russian and English, starting at 1 a.m. Kyiv time with a claim that 'Zelensky launched a nuclear warhead at Kyiv' and a shelter warning, later followed by fake claims of a physical attack on Zelensky, and posted similar messages on the site, which staff removed. The outlet says the content points to a Russian operation and that members' payment data isn't at risk because third parties handle it. It came three days after Ukraine's air-raid alert app was hijacked to send fake nuclear and chemical alerts."

### Hackers got into the Kyiv Independent's website CMS and a newsletter service and emailed readers fake claims that Zelensky fired a nuclear warhead at Kyiv

For any newsroom or organization with a large mailing list: the newsletter platform is a broadcast channel that readers trust. Enforce SSO or hardware-key MFA on it and on the CMS, limit who can send to the full list, require a second approver for sends outside the normal schedule, and keep an out-of-band way (social accounts, site banner) to tell readers quickly that a message was fake.
