Burnaby School District (BC): ransomware since Sep 21; student/parent/staff files copied and stolen

Burnaby Schools (SD41) says it discovered a cyber incident on Sep 21, 2026, confirmed unauthorized access, and that "files containing personal information were copied and stolen" in a ransomware attack. Phone service was restored Sep 28 and MyEducation/family portal on Oct 1; learning was not disrupted. Affected data may include 2024/2026 student/parent contact info, Personal Education Numbers, DOB, grade/school, Ministry designations, registration/residency documents, kindergarten assessment notes (2021–2025), and lists of students on specialized supports (sometimes with diagnosis). Personnel records for staff were also at risk. The district reported to Burnaby RCMP and BC's privacy commissioner, and on Oct 14 offered TransUnion Fraud Alert registration to students (staff offer dated Oct 1). Investigation continues.
